I am currently having an email discussion with friends about dressing up your pets. I am firmly on the side of this is a totally necessary activity. Only one of my dogs lets me dress him up, and I honestly don't take advantage of it as much as I should. Here is my pomeranian, Ollie, in his Halloween costume.

If I had foresight (and a fat pom instead of a mis-breed HUGE pom), I would be sitting on the goldmine that is Boo. I can never get sick of this dog that has been taking over my Facebook feed with his cuteness.

Because God loves Rock of Love as much as we do, Bret Michaels has finally been released from the hospital after his near death brain hemorrhage. Bret seems like a really nice person, and I'm glad he is doing better since he is fairly young (47) and has two young kids. So I hope everything works out for him on his road to full recovery. He was actually in my office building lobby a few months ago, and I got genuinely excited to see him and his silky mane (it's quite lovely in person.)

However, the new PEOPLE just came out and features Bret along with some photos (some of which were shot just two days before the hemorrhage.) The best thing is that the quote they chose to put alongside the largest photo is:

"We didn't have to shave his head or do any surgery, says his neurologist Dr. Joseph Zambrankski. So he pretty much wore his bandana like 99 percent of the time."

So Bret was basically struggling for speech, barely coherent, his girlfriend bending down, pressing her ear next to his lips straining to hear what he needed, finally making out "...ban...dan...a....(silence)."

This Is England is one of those movies that has pretty much nothing wrong with it. It is gritty and believable while remaining just heartwarming enough not to become overwhelmingly cheesy. If you have haven't seen it, it will not disappoint. Especially the lead actor, Thomas Turgoose who is the cutest little skinhead ever!

Somers Town is the new film from the same director, Shane Meadows, and also stars Turgoose as a British runaway who befriends a Polish teen. It looks like it will have the same feel as This Is England, I'm very excited!

Holy crap, according the the NY Times hugging is a teen phenonenom. When and why did this happen? I really hate hugging, and try to avoid it at all costs. I mention this fact to others, but then get suckered into hugging anyway so I don't seem like a jerk. I think a large part is the boob smooshing. Good thing I am not in high school these days...“If somebody were to not hug someone, to never hug anybody, people might be just a little wary of them and think they are weird or peculiar..."

This reminded me of my own personal high school trauma, kissing on the cheek. For some reason, at some point during high school, everyone started kissing each other on the cheek. Now I come from a foreign family who kisses on both cheeks as a greeting and goodbye, so cheek kissing has never bothered me. I would have to kiss people who were my "cousins" on the first meeting. However, kissing on the cheek became obligatory among all my friends and for some reason this made me feel weird. I have gotten used to it now, and just go for it, but for a while there I would try to avoid it. What it boils down to is I am fine with kissing an 80-year old "cousin" with a hairy mole who likely eats whole garlic cloves and a shot of grappa for breakfast, but at one point in my life a 16-yr old girl or boy would freak me out. I'm just glad it was kissing and not hugging, I don't think I could have lasted with the hugging in high school. It just seems like it would take half your day and people could feel your fat.

Jim Gaffigan has a new comedy special 'King Baby' premiering on Comedy Central this Sunday. I think the bit below about Waffle House will surpass his hot pocket bit as my new favorite. I went to a Waffle House for the first time last summer on my honeymoon road trip (don't be jealous, I'm classy), and I can only say I wish Waffle Houses existed closer to my home. Holy shit, our waitress was like 89 and she was out of everything that people kept ordering. It really did feel like I was at my crotchety grandma's house (if either of my grandma's spoke english and knew how to cook anything besides porridge.) Someone came in and asked for the non-smoking section, which was like 2 tables about 2 ft away from the smoking section. Seriously, who goes to this amazing place if they are not an alcoholic smoker.

If you are a fan of the food network, you may have seen Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee. Basically, she buys pre-made crap from a store and tosses it together. This would be fine if the results weren't always semi-edible. Which is how we come to her grand masterpiece, the Kwanzaa cake. This cake involves store-bought angel food cake, icing in a can, apple pie filling in the hole, nuts, and pumpkin seeds. The color of the icing is the least appealing thing ever followed by topping it off with the hugest candles I have ever seen. Once a knife needs to become involved, I think that means the candles are too big for the cake.

He was four when he ran away! Russians are seriously hardcore. Even though this Ivan incident was documented in '98, it seems that most of the stories are fake or very far-fetched, but it's still amazing.

I have been spending most of my day trying to verify the age of my new house. Why does it matter you might ask? Well, I need to verify it in order to get in with the old ladies at the historical society. If your home is 100 years or older, you can be a part of the society and get a hand painted plaque to display on your front porch. I've managed to find a document online that narrows it down to 1887. Our contact at the historical society is named Angel. I haven't met her in person yet but she is totally Rose Nyland in my mind.

I love being old! I can't wait to start wearing muumuus to the beach. I think this is why I have been on a crazy Golden Girls kick lately. It's one of 5 shows I DVR, and I simply cannot get enough. I was home one day watching it while my contractor was touching up some paint when he let out his total stoner laugh and said, "This is funnier when you watch it when you're old." How true it is.

Part of the enjoyment is watching the theme song which I feel only enhances the experience. Why is this song never irritating?

Karl Lagerfeld's 10 minute short about Coco Chanel is live. I hate to say it, it was a lil boring. I only typed those words cause I know Karl will never read this blog.

Finally, I hate to even draw a slight comparison between myself & Liz Lemon cause she's so hip and so now but I will anyway. The flashback in this clip from last night's 30 Rock totally reminded of this time in high school when I was "flirting" with a boy and then he kinda gave me the cold shoulder. I was talking to my friend like "aw shucks I'm such a loser", and she was like "um what are you talking about you were being an asshole to him." That's when I (sorta) learned flirting is not mocking people.

Karl Lagerfeld made a 10-minute silent film about Coco Chanel to open his pre-fall Chanel show ( I weep for all the amazingness I will never be able to afford.) The full film will be on Chanel.com tomorrow, but the trailer is online now. It's all models and fabulous clothes. I think it looks surprisingly good. God I wish I lived in the early 20th century could smoke without a care.
